But the use of solvent-based glue is not limited to product selection. To achieve a strong and durable connection, factors such as the type of surface, the amount of glue, the method of application, drying time, environmental conditions and how to prepare the surface should also be considered.
In this article, we intend to fully examine what is solvent-based glue, what are its features, in what industries is it used, and what is the correct method of using solvent-based glue. Also, in the following, we will learn about the important points of buying these products and the importance of choosing a reliable manufacturer such as Chesb Qavam Nasiri.
What is solvent-based glue?
Solvent-based glue is a type of glue whose ingredients are dissolved or dispersed in an organic solvent or a combination of solvents. During use, the solvent gradually evaporates and the remaining sticky substances create a bond between the two surfaces.
This type of glue is different from water-based glues. In water-based glue, water plays the main role in transferring and spreading adhesive materials, but in solvent-based glue, appropriate solvents are used for formulation.
One of the reasons for the widespread use of solvent-based adhesives is the ability to create proper adhesion on materials that may not be compatible with some water-based adhesives.
Of course, the type of solvent, resin and other ingredients have a great effect on the final performance of the product. For this reason, not all solvent-based adhesives can be considered the same in terms of strength, drying time, resistance and application.
The most important features of solvent-based glue
Solvent-based glue can have different characteristics depending on the formulation and intended application, but some characteristics are common in many products of this group.
Adequate adhesion strength
One of the most important features of solvent-based glue is to create a proper connection between many surfaces. In various industries, there is a need for an adhesive that can hold parts well together and withstand normal forces.
Of course, the amount of adhesion depends on the type of material, surface preparation, ambient temperature and the characteristics of the product itself.
drying speed
Many solvent-based adhesives have a good drying time due to the relatively fast evaporation of the solvent. This feature is very useful for production lines and workshops where the speed of operations is important.
However, "surface drying" does not necessarily mean that the joint has reached its maximum ultimate strength. The time to reach the final strength should be determined based on the technical information of the product.
Can be used on different surfaces
Another advantage of solvent base glue is the possibility of using some products of this group on a variety of materials.
Depending on the formulation, solvent based adhesives can be used to bond materials such as:
- Wood
- Rubber
- Some plastics
- Leather
- Fabric
- Foam
- Metal
- Some composite materials
- Various coatings
be used.
Of course, not every product is suitable for all these levels, and the manufacturer's recommended applications must be checked.
Good resistance to environmental conditions
Some types of solvent based glue can have good resistance to moisture, heat or chemicals. The amount of this resistance completely depends on the formulation of the product.
Therefore, when buying, you should not be satisfied only with the word "resistant". For specialized applications, it is better to check the technical information related to temperature, humidity and chemicals.
Solvent-based glue is used in what industries?
The applications of solvent based glue are very wide and these products are used in various industries.
The use of solvent-based glue in the furniture industry
In the production of furniture and wooden artifacts, the connection of covers, foams, fabrics and some parts is very important. Some solvent-based adhesives can be used for such applications due to their adhesion and speed.
Choosing the right glue should be done based on the coating material, type of foam, wood and production method.
Application in the shoe industry
The shoe industry is one of the fields in which glue plays a very important role. Connecting the sole, upper and some side parts requires a glue with proper adhesion and flexibility.
Some types of solvent-based glue are used in this industry due to their ability to bond on materials such as rubber, leather and some synthetic materials.
Application in leather industry
In the production of leather products such as bags, shoes, belts and other products, glue must be able to create a proper connection and have a certain degree of flexibility.
For this reason, in this industry, it is very important to choose an adhesive suitable for the type of leather and the material to be attached to it.
Application in packaging industries
Some solvent-based adhesives are also used in various packaging and laminating processes. The type of glue in this section should be chosen according to the type of film, paper, foil or other layers used.
Application in the production of foam products
Connecting foam to fabric, wood, plastic or other materials is one of the important uses of some solvent-based adhesives.
In such applications, the adhesion speed, flexibility and compatibility of the adhesive with foam are very important.
Application in some construction projects
Some solvent-based products are also used for gluing parts or special building materials. However, for any construction application, an adhesive should be used that is specifically designed for the same surface and conditions.
The correct use of solvent-based glue
Even the best solvent based glue cannot perform well if used incorrectly. The correct implementation of glue usually involves several main steps.
First step: surface preparation
The first and one of the most important steps is to prepare the surfaces.
The level should be as much as possible:
- Clean
- Dry
- Dust-free
- Grease-free
- Contamination-free
- Free from rust or separating materials
Be.
The presence of grease or dust can prevent proper contact of the adhesive with the surface and thus reduce the strength of the connection.
The second step: testing on a small part
If this is the first time you are using a solvent based adhesive on a particular material, it is best to test a small amount of the product on a small area first.
This is especially important for plastics, coatings and sensitive materials; Because some solvents may have an adverse effect on some materials.
Third step: apply the right amount of glue
The amount of glue should be appropriate to the type of surface and product instructions.
Using too much glue does not always increase strength. In some cases, high thickness can increase the drying time and even reduce the quality of the connection.
The fourth step: complying with the opening time or waiting time
Some solvent-based adhesives need to be exposed to air for a certain period of time after application so that part of the solvent evaporates.
This time varies depending on the type of glue and environmental conditions. Therefore, product instructions must be followed.
The fifth step: connecting two levels
After the glue reaches the right conditions, the two surfaces should be placed on each other according to the recommended method.
In some products, it is necessary to put proper pressure on the two surfaces to make full contact.
The sixth stage: stabilization and time to reach the final strength
After connecting, the parts should not be subjected to strong pressure or tension immediately; Unless the product is designed for such conditions.
It may take some time to reach the final resistance. Its exact time should be obtained from the technical specifications of the product.
What factors affect the performance of solvent-based adhesive?
The performance of solvent based glue is not only dependent on the product formulation. The conditions of applying glue are also very important.
ambient temperature
Ambient temperature can affect solvent evaporation and drying time. At a very low temperature, the drying process may be slower, and at a very high temperature, the solvent may evaporate too quickly.
humidity
Environmental humidity and surface humidity can affect the performance of some adhesives. The desired surface must have suitable conditions according to the product instructions.
Surface sex
Each material has different surface characteristics. For example, wood, metal, rubber and plastic do not have the same behavior against glue.
For this reason, the selection of solvent base glue should be done based on the material of both surfaces.
Pressure when connecting
In some applications, applying proper pressure increases the contact between two surfaces and can help improve the connection.
Adhesive layer thickness
A thickness that is more or less than the recommended value can have a negative effect on the performance of the joint.
Advantages of using solvent-based glue compared to some glues
Choosing the type of glue should be done based on the application, but Solvent-based glue has advantages in some situations that make it a good choice.
including:
- Suitable adhesion on some difficult surfaces
- Suitable drying in many formulations
- Possibility of industrial and production use
- High variety of formulations
- Usability in some specialized applications
- Suitable performance of some products against moisture and heat
- Possibility of use in connecting different materials
Of course, no type of adhesive is the best option for all applications, and the choice should be made based on the actual needs of the project.
Safety tips when using solvent-based glue
One of the most important points that must be taken into account when using solvent-based glue is compliance with safety principles.
Since many of the solvents used in these products are volatile and flammable, product safety instructions must be fully followed.
Proper ventilation
When working with solvent-based glue, the environment must have sufficient ventilation so that vapors do not accumulate in the environment.
Keep away from flame
Glue and its vapors should be kept away from flames, sparks, cigarettes and sources of heat or ignition.
Use of protective equipment
Depending on the type of product and safety instructions, it is recommended to use suitable gloves, protective glasses and other personal protective equipment.
Correct maintenance
The glue container should be stored according to the manufacturer's instructions and its lid should be closed well after use.
Also, it is better to store the product in recommended temperature conditions and away from heat sources.
What points should we pay attention to when buying solvent-based glue?
Buying a suitable product is the first step to achieving a quality connection. Therefore, when buying solvent base glue, it is better to check the following.
Application type
First determine what the glue is used for. The glue used for shoes is not necessarily suitable for wood or metal.
Material of surfaces
The material of both surfaces that are supposed to be connected is important. This issue should be clarified before purchase.
drying time
If production speed is very important, drying time is one of the important factors in product selection.
required resistance
If the joint is exposed to moisture, heat, cold, pressure or chemicals, a product must be selected that has the required resistance.
Packaging and storage conditions
Appropriate packaging can help maintain the quality of the glue. Also, the production date, storage conditions, and information on the packaging should be checked.
Why is it important to buy solvent-based glue from a reliable collection?
The quality of the glue has a direct effect on the quality of the connection. Using an inappropriate or low-quality product may cause parts to separate, increase waste, and impose rework costs.
For this reason, it is better to pay attention to the history of the manufacturer, the technical information of the product, the quality of the raw materials and the services provided when buying solvent-based glue.
Qavam Nasiri glue can be one of the options to be considered for providing the glues required by different industries and projects. Choosing the right product from among the products offered by Qavam Nasiri Adhesive should be done based on the type of application, the type of surfaces and the technical needs of the project.
If the quality of the connection is important to you, it is suggested to check the technical specifications of the product before buying and choose a product that is compatible with your intended use.
What is the difference between solvent-based glue and water-based glue?
One of the common questions when choosing glue is the difference between solvent-based glue and water-based glue.
In solvent based adhesives, the solvent plays an important role in the formulation and usually evaporates after the adhesive is applied. On the other hand, in water-based adhesives, water plays the role of carrier or dispersion medium for adhesive materials.
In general, solvent-based adhesives may be advantageous for certain surfaces and applications, while water-based adhesives are a better choice for some projects in terms of ease of use and environmental conditions.
Therefore, it is not possible to say which type of glue is always better without knowing the application.
How to choose the best solvent base glue?
To choose the best solvent base adhesive, you must first determine your needs. Answering a few questions can make the choice easier:
- What materials are going to be joined together?
- Is the connection indoor or outdoor?
- How much flexibility is required?
- Will the connection be exposed to moisture?
- Is heat resistance important?
- How important is drying speed?
- How much stress or tension is the connection going to be subjected to?
After determining these things, you can choose a product whose features are more in line with the needs of the project.
